- Assistant Professor of Medicine at KMC Manipal – 25th August 1977 to 5th February 1980.
- Associate Professor at KMC Manipal – 8th February 1980 5th February 1983.
- Professor & Head of the Dept. of Medicine at KMC, Manipal – 5th February 1983 to 30th June 2014.
- Professor of Medicine at Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru – 5th July 2014 to 28th November 2014.

Prof. N. R. Rau joined as Head of Department and Senior Consultant, Dept. of General Medicine, at Adarsha Hospital from 28th November 2014. He has been as Examiner for various medical colleges (MBBS, MD, DM, BDS – Medicine) of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Pondicherry. He is the Member of International Board of Advisors – Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine Textbook. Has been PhD guide for 4 students and published – 43 National and International Journals. He is the Sections Editor for Miscellaneous sections of the API Textbook of Medicine and has contributed a chapter on Bioterronism. He was the member of Editorial Board of Annual Diabetes update Book and referee of Karnataka Journal of Medical Sciences. He was the sections editor of API Textbook of Medicine 2006 and Member of Pharmacy Council of India.
